Can a serious staph infection be considered cute and cuddly? In the case of Giant Microbes, yes, they are very cute. I may have spent too much time around microbiologists at a previous work experience or perhaps have heard enough emergency room stories from my husband (a veteran Army medic), but I thought the idea of creating plush toys out of microbes was pretty genius. Giant Microbes, Inc takes a Petri dish microbial and has a product line for an interesting and educational GIGANTICMicrobes 15-20″ plush doll. They have the funny (Yogurt) to the more serious (Anthrax) microbial, these plush dolls are just plain interesting and entertaining. A staph infection is no joke and a more common occurrence in our health care system than we would like to see, but it is also a good teaching tool as far as understanding the strain and the importance of washing your hands and keeping your environment clean. Plus, they are adorable!

All kidding aside, MRSA, is very difficult to treat and feared strain of the Staphylococcus aureus (known as ‘staph’) bacterium that is said to affect almost 5% of healthcare facilities in the United States. It is feared because of its resistance to most antibiotics. MRSA are usually found within hospitals, but are becoming increasingly prevalent in community-acquired infections where proper sanitization and maintaining a clean environment is not followed.
