Product Review: Bear In Underwear [Hardcover] (Age 4 +)
We are huge fans of Todd H. Doodler’s board book for young kids called What Color is Bear’s Underwear? and wanted to try this older version on for size. In a nutshell, it’s about a bear who finds a backpack full of underwear in the woods and he and his critter friends spend some time trying on pairs until they each find a pair they love. Funny, huh? While Brooke loves it, her dad thinks it’s funny and I am recommending it in my week long potty–training- ESQUE products, it may not be for everyone and I will tell you why.
Here are the major concerns in the reviews I have read on this book:
- Bears ‘friends’ pressure him to open the backpack he finds the the woods even chanting the words “OPEN IT!”
- Bears ‘friends’ love to use words like ‘dorky’ and ‘lame’ in describing the different underwear he tries
- Bear tries on the dirtiest stinkiest underwear he finds in the backpack and, really, that is pretty gross
Why do these things ring true and I still like and recommend this book? Well, it’s because I think the book is age-appropriate, fun and it opens up great conversational topics for kids on subjects like peer pressure. What kid does not feel the pressure to do something even in pre-K just because their friends say to do it? When reading the book, you can stop and ask your child, “Do you think Bear should open the backpack just because his friends told him to open it? What would you do in this situation?”, etc…. Brooke also knows it’s supposed to be a funny and a gross part in the book when Bear puts on stinky underwear. That is called humor, right? She says “PU, Stinky” when she sees that picture and we all laugh. Now the ‘lame’ and ‘dorky’ words were a little interesting in a kid’s book, and if you are totally against using words like that in a child’s vocabulary I can’t say much, but I will say that the words are used to describe different types of underwear that he tries and not the Bear himself. I will let you decide if this is a book for you and your child, but I do know that we love this silly, crazy book and laugh right along with Brooke when she ‘reads’ it to us (and, yes, she has the entire book memorized). Plus, it is super cool (or as Bear in Underwear says, ‘Dy-NO-mite)’ to wear underwear, right preschoolers?
