Questions to Start Great Conversations
I certainly have made up for lost time as an introverted child and have turned into quite a motor-mouthed adult once you get me started. I absorbed so much information holding back for so long that it can be hard for me to sit still long enough and not fill in every last gasp of air left in the room. But, you know, I don’t want to just talk. I really want to listen when my child talks to me….about anything and everything. Even things I don’t want to think about her doing or her to know about or what someday she might do….well, I actually DO want to hear that, too. It’s quite hard to start a relationship with your child as an adult if you never built a foundation of respect, love and trust from the beginning. So how do you do that? You ask questions. You find out what is in that curious head of your kid. Parents need to try talking and listening from the start and will be surprised by what you learn as you both grow together. I am quite aware that today’s conversations about Pooh Bear sharing his honey pot with Piglet could someday be a real conversation about a dude nicknamed Pooh sharing his pot with some pig (oh, no, help me!) and she wants some insight. Get my drift? So let’s start small with the easy questions now (what superhero power do you want to have?) and work our way up to the harder life questions when it is age-appropriate. You certainly don’t have to be your child’s best friend to be a good coach or mentor, but it helps if you get their respect. So let’s listen to our kids! And this product certainly makes it easy to ask those fun little questions while our kids are young.
Kids Table Topics to Go {Kids Edition} is a forty question card game in a plastic slipcase that is perfect for families to entertain your little ones while on the go. There are great ice breaking questions (ex: what’s your favorite board game?) for things like new situations, long car trips, waiting in line and even a great way to help young readers practice sounding out sentences. Asking curious questions is a great way to pass the time and learn something new about your child and your child can also play and learn something new about their friends. The more you listen the more kids will talk and the more they talk the more you can build that parent and child relationship. Let’s get those conversations started!
