Product Review: Pride & Prejudice {Board Book} (Geared for Ages 0-3)

As a teen, I loved and devoured all of Jane Austen’s novels; Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park but there was just something really special about Pride and Prejudice. The societal truth of eighteenth century England made me laugh and Austen’s flippant tone in that very first sentence was dripping with sarcasm, “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. Austen’s tongue-in-cheek witty words from an improper lady at that time in England have always amused me. It is quite interesting to take a classic book about five sisters with intertwined love stories from the 18th century Georgian England and turn it into a children’s board book. It is quite another thing to make it entertaining for infants and toddlers. Yes, it somehow works really well. I suppose that an author who has coined one book Y Is for Yorick: A Slightly Irreverent ABC Book for Grown-Ups may have found a board board for ages 0-3 on Pride & Prejudice a walk in the park!
Pride & Prejudice, a BabyLit Board Book for the 0-3 crowd, is a counting book that is a great early introduction not only of Ms. Austen but also of this interesting idea about BabyLit. BabyLit is the -oh so- fashionable way to introduce your young child to classic literature. We found it quite enjoyable to read to Brooke and I had a good laugh at the counting spin the author took of Pride & Prejudice that I found gleefully hilarious. Themes are introduced like; 2. Rich Gentleman, 3 Houses and 4 Marriage Proposals. Love it! It is honestly a wonderful (1-10) counting book on top of a very quick highlight of the Jane Austen classic. Perhaps there is more to this BabyLit thing than I had imagined. It is quite entertaining and a definite must for any new parent with an English or teaching degree!
