Product Review: Elena’s Story (Tales of the World Series) [Hardcover] (Age 6+)
Tales of the World! Elena’s Story out August 1, 2012!
Elena’s Story is the latest book in the Tales of the World fiction series for children about other kids around the world through Sleeping Bear Press to be released on August 1, 2012. The idea behind this series is to bring fictional tales from other countries home to our young readers. Elena is from Guatemala and her story of how she is trying to go to school and learn to read while also helping her hardworking family. While her father is away on a plantation, Elena helps her mom with her siblings and with household duties while she also struggles to go to school and learn to read Spanish (her mother speaks Mayan and cannot read). She needs to conserve the candles that she would need to read at night although her mother hears her reading to her little brother one night and is very proud of her daughter and not caring about her use of the candles. This is a very sweet and simple story about a loving family in Guatemala who works hard to make their children’s lives better through hard work and education.
Check out some additional Tales of the World titles: Megan’s Year (Ireland), Waiting for the Owl’s Call (Afghanistan), Yatandou (Mali) and Yuki and the One Thousand Carriers (Japan)
