Product Review: Animal Track Rubbing Plates (Age 5+)

Did you know that just two years ago marked the 100th year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America? I did! Why? I suppose it is because my mother’s father talks a lot about his days of starting the Boy Scouts Troop 22 in Wilkins Run, OH in 1947 as well as being a Scoutmaster himself. Although when the Boy Scouts of America officially started, tracking was important for food and survival and today these skills are mostly used for recreation. Interestingly, although the tracking Scout merit badge was once put into retirement, it still exists today and is considered a popular merit badge. In the popular tradition of the Scouts; be prepared little trackers!
The Animal Track Rubbing plates are an awesome way to introduce the science of tracking into a fun craft for kids. This set includes sixteen animal track textured rubbing plates (4″ x 5″) that can be placed under paper and rubbed with a marker, crayon or pencil to see the track design. Although part of the difficulty of tracking is finding the tracks themselves, Roylco allows our little trackers to exclusively study the footprint (even make a cast!) and inspect the tracks to determine the right animal to which they belong. Questions scouts would ask themselves would be if the animal was domestic or wild, etc. Allow your little scout to ‘earn’ their own merit badge and they can become an ace tracker.
