Product Review: Will I Have a Friend? (We Love First Grade!) [Hardcover] (Ages 5-8)
Great Books for Great Kids
Most young children, especially introverts, are nervous about entering new social situations where they do not know anyone and wonder if they will meet a friend. For kids with social anxieties or are slow to warm to new situations, going to a school, especially for a first time without knowing anyone can be very stressful. As parents, we want to calm and reassure our children and be realistic that their feelings are valid. Kids may not feel ready to jump in to the crowd that first day or even first week; and that is okay. The wonderful thing about the We Love First Grade Series by Star Bright Books is that is gives realistic expectations and explanations to young children and I especially liked the Will I Have a Friend? book very reassuring, realistic and age appropriate.
It can be hard for adults to make friendships with other adults so it can be even harder for young kids who lack the same experience and understanding of social skills to understand how to make friends in a new setting. I think that the situations presented in this book for the young boy Jim were realistic in what children can encounter in a new school environment and how they can handle making friends from children they do not know. I love that the book presents situations that did not go as Jim had hoped and a friendship was not formed at each occurrence. However, Jim was able to find another boy that he formed a special bond with and who, over time, will probably grow into a lasting friendship. What a wonderful presentation for children to see that friendship grows over time and that it really takes work on both parties to make a friendship work.
