Product Review: Lonely Planet Not For Parents Travel Book [Hardcover] (Ages 8+)
Cool Stuff to Know about Every Country in the World
For those like myself who like to read up on history and plan out adventures before traveling, I have been familiar with the Lonely Planet series of books for many years. Their interesting tidbits sprinkled throughout their travel guidebooks contain interesting facts and obscure eateries (my personal favorites) that have kept me coming back for more copies each time I make a major adventure. I was beyond thrilled to see that this travel guidebook company has decided to branch out and feature travel books specifically geared towards children. After all, I highly doubt my desire to find the perfect Café Noisette in Paris would go over quite so well as a chocolate taste testing tour to a child. I want Brooke to learn the cool stuff she can hopefully one day experience around the world and the Lonely Planet Not For Parents Travel Book is the perfect start!
The Lonely Planet Not For Parents Travel Book cover interesting facts, pictures, maps, flags and cool features perfect for children that spans 199 countries that are grouped by region/continent. Yes, I said ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE countries. Because of the massive amount of information crammed into this 208 page book (and don’t forget the 192 maps included!), the information is more like little snapshots and slices of information to get our kids excited about all the culture and diversity that exists in our interesting planet. Each country gets a full page devoted to its background and East Timor gets as much background information as North Korea or the United States. Kids will love to hear that in certain countries eating fried spiders is as perfectly acceptable a snack as a potato chip or that in one country chewing gum is actually banned! It’s not all just silly and interesting facts in this book that make it so great, its geographically and visually enlightening illustrations are equally impressive. This is a fascinating and impressive book and I have to give Lonely Planet props for surpassing their already impressive reputation. Bravo!
Interesting Fact from the Book! Velcro was created when a Swiss Inventor took his dog for a walk in 1948. The dog came home covered in grass seeds. The hooks on the seeds gave the owner an idea for a new fastener. OK, Spike, I’m waiting for my epiphany!
About Lonely Planet: It’s amazing what two crazy kids from Ireland and England could do after an around-the-world honeymoon adventure thirty years ago that left them broke but world savvy! Tony and Maureen Wheeler experienced a trip of a lifetime and they are still earning and learning from their worldly adventures. Convinced they needed to share their travel information with the world, their writing and travel led to the creation of the globally successful company Lonely Planet. Now parents to Tashi and Kieran, world travelers in their own right, it is fun that Lonely Planet have been focusing on travel books for parents traveling with kids and now books on travel for kids themselves. Although she and Tony sold Lonely Planet to BBC Worldwide a few years ago they are still ambassadors for the company. Now that is Fantastic!
