Product Review: Garbage Flowers Book [Hardcover] (Age 12+)
Fun and Fabulous Recycled Craft Kits
I have made no secret I am not a crafty person. I wish I was a crafty person, but I know my limitations. My paintings are like Picasso pop art gone wrong, my human sculptures are like half horror-half bad plastic surgery victims waiting to be put down to spare their cruel existence. However, I do try and create in my own way and I had my own Goodwill Punky Brewster-like clothing style growing up and a childhood room straight out of the 70s show Sanford and Son before picking became ‘cool’. My dad was a ‘picker’ before I knew the term ‘picker’ existed. We called it going garage sale-ing and we ended up with enough junk to fill our house that started my still-prized vinyl record collection. In high school, my friends and I became experts at dumpster driving at the local private college where rich kids came from all over Ohio and get a taste of the down-home folks with no real shopping centers throw out name brand clothes and furniture in the trash as if it were half rotten apples. No sweat off our back; we took home some real cool treasures. Recycled and upcycled is not a new concept to most people in the world, although since it is labeled as the new ‘in vogue’ thing within the middle to upper class households of first world countries but I actually find it an exciting and not an insulting movement. After all, shouldn’t we all care about turning others trash into treasure rather than fodder for our landfills?
The Garbage Flowers Book, really more of a kit, contains needle-nose pliers, wire stems and leaf stickers to create your own garbage into flowers that are works of art. Most of us have clutter, junk draws, trash and recycle bins and other funky boxes of never used items that can be turned into ‘beautiful’ bouquets. You and your children can create simple yet stunning creature out of, well, garbage. Let’s call it the ‘upcycled treasures’ of the modern world and lets all start making the world a less-trashy and more modernistic artsy place to live. Plus you get this ultra-cute green ‘stem’ stickers to really put your garbage flowers over the edge. Awwww! This kid-centric book is geared towards children age 12 and up (needle nosed pliers and wire stems are not exactly kid-friendly), but you can take this concept into a version for the younger crowd. After all, we are all on this earth together, so why not start the ‘cleaning the environment’ concept a little early? Another Bonus to this kit? It is painted on recycled paper with soy ink!
