I was an unwilling participant in the first ensemble play I was forced into at the age of nine. My fourth grade teacher also happened to be my small city’s local theater director and said she ‘saw something in me’ and thought acting in this childish play called Kiddlywinks would be good for my shyness. To be frank, I spent most of the school year staring at the wall and talking to no one and I think that made her very uncomfortable. I had just moved from a tiny little village to a ‘major city’ (to me) of 14,000 people during the summer before I started school. I was never a ‘joiner’ the entire school year and my teacher’s boisterous attitude made me anxious and annoyed. I was actually always perfectly happy being alone, but not everyone felt the same way about my preference and tried to bring me out of my shell and blamed it on the move. Needless to say, I did not agree with my teacher and really resented my forced start in the performance arts but, darn it all, she ended up being right in that it was a very positive experience and something I was quite good at doing. It was not until later in my early high school years that I sought out being active in plays and musicals in the local theater company (under the direction of my fourth grade teacher!), but that fourth grade play was really what planted a seed in my brain that I could perform in front of strangers and not ‘die’. Thank you, Ms. Somerville, and I do apologize for being such a moody little child in the fourth grade. It was not all your fault, I swear!

I intend to be a fully engaged audience member or actor depending on the path of the brilliant director of Ms. Brooke in her future productions! Baby, Take a Bow!
