Product Review: En Mi Casa CD (Geared towards ages 1 ½ -7)
Sing-A-Lingo. Sing. Laugh. Learn.
I like to learn information in a practical way. As a late second language learner, I had a very hard time grasping a foreign language in college and, even though I got good grades in my courses, it really wasn’t until I did an immersion program in my early twenties that the words began to click. Now that I think about it, the frustration I felt in the classroom was probably from the lack of application of the words to my own day-to-day life that made it challenging. Learning sentence structure through stories about some fictional guy named Carlos who was getting dressed up to go to a dance and do the cha cha did not cut it for my confused brain. When I was able to start incorporating a foreign language into my everyday life, it really began to make sense. I began speaking Spanish confidently in the first few weeks I spent in Malaga in what four years of Spanish courses in the United States could not provide. I was immediately interested in testing out the Sing-A-Lingo’s En Mi Casa CD because I read how this program focused on teaching Spanish to children through incorporating activities in everyday life that made sense to me and (I hoped) my toddler.
En Mi Casa (In My House) CD is an award-winning 17 track CD to help children become bilingual through learning day-to-day Spanish while also focusing on entertaining kids through music. The songs are fun and the Spanish words are simple words that children use every day (see four of the seventeen titles below).
- Tienes Hambre?-Are you Hungry?
- Lava las Manos-Wash your Hands
- Abre el Refrigerador-Open the Refrigerator
- Pon la Mesa-Set the Table
Right off the bat the upbeat and lively song En la Mañana (In the Morning) set the tone for this catchy CD. Since I am passionate about exposing Brooke to other languages, I have tried many different foreign language CDs for kids and this is one of the best we have tried. Also available is the supplemental Spanish Learning Tools Kit for purchase through Sing-A-Lingo’s website with additional activities for your little ones to incorporate Spanish throughout their entire day. Impressive stuff, Piña!

About Piña Madera, co-founder of Sing-A-Lingo: This bilingual Acton, MA mom has been an educator for over 25 years, including teaching ESL and Montessori. Her own mother was from Mexico and raised Piña to be bilingual and she wanted to pass that on to her own children. Wanting to incorporate more everyday language into teaching her children Spanish, she recruited her musician husband in her effort and together they created the successful Sing-A-Lingo products. Check out their current product list here. Piña also filled me in that she will be offering a CD and accompanying book in Mandarin Chinese in the near feature, so stay tuned!
