You may remember the Hypercolor t-shirts that contained leuco dye and would change color when you touched them because of the dyes sensitivity to temperature change. They were popular in the early 90’s when I was in middle school and I really, really wanted one. Although I never did get the t-shirt, I am still fascinated by thermochromic pigments and Crazy Aaron has an entire set of hypercolor putty for our curious kids.
Crazy Aaron’s Hypercolor Thinking Putty comes in a metal tin with 1/5 lb of heat sensitive putty. The color change of the Hypercolor putty is based on the combination of two colors; the color of the putty and the color of the thermochromic dye that is sensitive to heat. The Hypercolor putty is offered in four different color combinations of Twilight (blue and purple), Sunburst (yellow and orange), Chameleon (green and yellow) and Amethyst Blue (purple and pink). The putty will change color through the heat of your child’s hand and the website offers tips like putting the putty on the refrigerator or a hot mug to see quick color changes.
