Book Review: The Girl Who Cannot Eat Peanut Butter {Soft-cover} (Pre-School +)
“….everyone in her class ‘has something special or different that no one else has.”
Even though my husband and I do not have food allergies, we were a little nervous when we introduced a new food to Brooke and waited the recommended number of days after each new food item to make sure she did not react to it. We would breathe a sigh of relief each time she had no reaction and we feel very fortunate that our daughter has no food allergies or sensitivities. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, food allergies, especially peanut allergies, are a growing trend and there needs to be more knowledge on diagnosis and treatment throughout the United States. A food allergy usually happens quickly after a food is eaten when the body reacts against harmless proteins in a food. The most common severe food allergy reactions occur with peanuts, nuts, and seafood. The Girl Who Cannot Eat Peanut Butter is an excellent resource for children on the topic of food allergies.
The Girl Who Cannot Eat Peanut Butter is a book about a young girl named Sam who has a peanut allergy and can not eat peanut butter. The story is sweetly told in rhyming verse and explains that all children are different in a special way and Sam just happens to not be able to eat peanuts. It explains all the lovely foods Sam can eat, but she cannot eat peanut butter. The book smartly discusses why she can’t have peanuts and that in order for Sam to be safe and not get sick, she has to make sure to not eat any foods that contain peanuts. Sure, Sam sometimes gets upset she can’t eat peanut butter, but she knows that every person in her class has something unique and different about them. Plus, her special lunches without peanuts sound really fantastic! This is a great read for young children who have food allergies or to help kids without allergies understand what it is like and why some children cannot eat peanut butter.
