Product Review: Money Savvy @Home Kit (Education for the Whole Family. Geared for Kids Ages 6 to 11)
Helping Kids Get Smart About Money
My home lesson in money management as a child came from having a father who hated spending any money and a mother who liked to spend it on others as soon as she got it. I always heard we were broke and it wasn’t until adulthood when my husband and I were both making decent money that I started to relax a little with spending. Lay-offs and job changes to stay-at-home dad-dom brings us to today where I spend a good deal of time each month trying to stretch each dollar and pinch each penny. While in some aspects my handling personal finances seemed to come almost naturally, it was probably a combination of my learning how to save through a modest savings account at a young age and the fear of ‘going to the poorhouse’ (my dad’s famous words) that held my interest in holding on to financial security. While I’m mostly happy with my outcome of learning how to handle our family’s money, I was hoping to find a better method to help educate our daughter on being money savvy through a family-wide effort.
Money Savvy @Home Kit by Money Savvy Generation is a learning program for families with young children to help teach them about personal finances. Your kids can choose from a variety of piggy banks such as a Pig (choice of colors; blue, green, pink, purple or red), Cow or Football Bank that have four separate chambers to organize money to save, spend, donate and invest. There are goal setting stickers included, so if you child wants to save for an item like a bike, they can have a visual to help remind them of why they are saving. This kit offers lots of great information on handling and saving money and includes a parent handbook as well as a student workbook and a coloring activity book for the kids. The included CD-ROM has over 100 presentation images to help our kids become money savvy and even includes four sing along songs about money. If you have more than one child, Money Savvy Generation offers additional student materials with this set that includes a piggy bank, workbook and coloring/activity book for an additional $21.99 each.
