Product Review: Charged Up: The Story of Electricity – Science Works Series {Paperback} (Age 7+)
The Story of Electricity – It’s Really Shocking!
We are surrounded by electric charges and it is interesting to understand how humans can harness this power. We all know about Benjamin Franklin’s experiments with electricity in the mid-1700s, but did you know that around 600 B.C. a Greek philosopher called Thales of Miletus could have been the very first person to study electricity by experimenting with electrostatics? In fact, the word electricity comes from the Greek word ‘elektron’ which means amber. The study of magnetism and static electricity didn’t become popular until the 17th century when two Dutchman created something called the Leyden jar which was basically a glass jar filled with water and a nail that could give a wicked shock! Ouch. Fast forward until today and our growing dependence and reliance on electricity has created a complex interconnected electrical system within the United States. So how about a fun and interesting book from the Science Works series to help kids understand our modern story of electricity and get Charged Up?
Charged Up: The Story of Electricity is a book that is a reading adventure geared for third to six graders to help our kids understand the human relationship with electricity. The book smartly discusses how electricity is made- both naturally and artificially- and how we use electricity in our modern world. The text is engaging with colorful illustrations and the book offers a broad range on what happens when we turn on a light switch (I love the section on hydroelectric power plants) that will be beneficial for future studies on the subject. At the end of the book there is an example of a kid-friendly experiment our young scientists can easily accomplish with adult help. I always love to read children’s books that make learning enjoyable, especially in areas like science, and I think Charged Up provides an excellent resource for kids on the story of electricity!
