Product Review: How Do You Know What Time It Is? (Albert Whitman Prairie Books) [Paperback] (Grades: 2-5)
Albert Whitman & Company – Publishing Children’s Books Since 1919
How often do you think about time and how it works? I always seem to be on some sort of schedule where I need to watch the minutes and on a constant battle to keep up with the clock. Events like day light savings time clock changes and crossing time zones through travel that causes jet lag can throw me off for days. It is strange to think of life without a watch but it wasn’t so long ago that humans were using sundials and shadow sticks as simple time-measuring devices. If you want to help your child learn more about time, author Robert E. Wells has a gift for writing about science to make it fascinating for children. His book How Do You Know What Time It Is? unravels the mysteries behind time and how we have learned to track it throughout human history.
How Do You Know What Time It Is? is an educational book that was written to expand our children’s knowledge on time. Don’t let Robert’s informal writing style and cartoon-like illustrations fool you; this is excellent text book quality material and not a fluff comic. Phrases like, ‘Today we know that our seasons are not measured by the moon, but by Earth’s orbit of the sun!’ are followed with information on the Earth’s axis and the measurement of a solar year. Children will read about how we base our calendar on the Egyptians observation of the heliacal rising of Sirius and how agriculture and flooding played a huge factor in our time tracking history. Robert’s teaching style is unique and thought-provoking while also being fun and accurate in its science. If you want to provide your child with a book to get their brains flowing and a great overview of time and how it is measured you do not need to look any further than this read.
