Product Review:  The Way I Feel {Board Book} (Ideal for Toddlers)

“Feelings come and feelings go.  I never know what they’ll be.  Silly or angry, happy or sad – They’re all a part of me!”

I recently did a review of the children’s book The Way I Act and decided to do a follow-up review on the complementary book entitled The Way I FeelThe Way I Feel, written by the illustrator of The Way I Act, is offered in an abridged edition that is geared for the younger crowd of 18 months to 3 years.  I think a feelings book geared for toddlers, who can be very unpredictable in their emotions, is a fantastic resource.  The Way I Feel has the same vivid colorful pictures created from pastels (Janan said it was easier to do pastels with two interrupting young ones in her house!) that follow each emotion.  The ‘ANGRY’ page is in a bright red while the ‘happy’ page is in a sunny yellow.  The rhyming verse on feelings in this abridged edition are relevant for toddlers while the illustrations nicely demonstrate appropriate facial expressions for each emotion.  The Way I Feel is available in the full 32 page version for ages 4-9, a version in Spanish (Así me siento yo) and there is also a Teacher’s Guide available through Parenting Press.  Nice work, Janan!

About Author Janan CainThe Way I Feel is the first children’s book by author and illustrator, Janan Cain (click her to hear the pronunciation of her name).  Mother of two daughters who live outside of Chicago, Janan wrote the book for her children.  Janan has an Associate of Arts degree in visual communications at the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver and has had a freelance design and illustration practice since 1993.

Bonus!  4 Tips to Encourage Emotional Literacy (Excerpted from The Way I Feel)

  • Ask your child what circumstances make him or her feel happy, sad, jealous, and so on.
  • Discuss how to deal with emotions. (“If you’re angry, it’s not okay to hit or throw things, but it is okay to stomp your feet.”)
  • Talk about what actions or steps could be taken to change the circumstances leading to a feeling your child doesn’t like.
  • Practice noticing and naming feelings by asking your child how he or she feels at different times throughout the day. Discuss the differences in feelings that may seem similar, such as sad and bored, or jealous and angry.
