As a (*cough* self-proclaimed) musician, music-lover and mother, I like to incorporate lots of music into my child’s life and have read a lot about the importance of music and movement. There are many positive studies on the beneficial use of rhythmic song and dance in a young child’s learning especially birth through age seven. While Brooke, Bob and I like to dance to music together (Brooke has a very hilarious ‘fan’ dance she does), I wanted to find specific dance activities through music. The CD Action Songs for Preschoolers through Kimbo Educational has a great collection of rhythmic activities geared for ages three through seven.
Action Songs for Preschoolers is a 14-track CD under the direction of Georgiana Stewart designed to get our young ones moving to music. As stated on the Kimbo website, some children work best in this style of learning and this is a great compilation. This CD offers lots of activity through music plus you can add in different manipulatives (such as a bean bag for track 10) in conjunction with listening and following the instructions on the CD. This CD is silly and fun but has a directional purpose that a child as young as 3 can easily follow. I have never had a problem looking silly and being animated with my child, and this proved to be quite an asset when Brooke and I listen to this CD.
