I somehow talked my dad, who had never been on a commercial airplane, into taking a trip to Mexico City with me the summer before my senior year at Ohio University at nineteen. I just completed the last of a total of six quarters of Spanish language classes and I was going to go whether he came or not, and – shockingly- he said yes! My dad and I never really spent a lot of time getting to know each other until that trip. My dad (and I say this in a loving yet honest way) is a stubborn, hyper, over-planning, penny-pinching workaholic. Hey, I admit, we do have similarities! Ha! He is a fellow Economics undergrad major, former Ohio state auditor and spent most of his career (aka life) working as a director for the ‘welfare’ department (now Job and Family Services) until retirement. He doesn’t really know how to let loose from his perception of being the responsible adult. So, it was quite a shock to me that he said he would come to Mexico City and we had the absolute best time discovering the area with my great uncle who has since passed away. Together we explored Teotihuacan (we climbed the Pyramid of the Sun), Xochimilco and hung out at the Mexico City Museum. Mexico City will always be a precious memory to me that ignited a closer relationship that I still continue to enjoy with my dad. I hope to someday repeat that trip with my own daughter. For now, I love to share the culture and language of Mexico with her and I found the Mexico Gift Set from Tot Talk to be the perfect product for us.
The award-winning Mexico Gift Set from Tot Talk includes a Mexican map placemat, the Adventures in Mexico CD and the Adventures in Mexico DVD. Creator Sara Danzelaud is extremely passionate about early learning especially when it comes to bilingual or multilingual language opportunities and that is reflected in her products. The placemat is thickly laminated for multiple use. The front side of the placemat shows a map of Mexico’s 32 mainland states with graphics that demonstrate Mexico’s culture and include over 60 words in Spanish. The back of the placemat has many phrases in Spanish and English as well as how to count to 100 in Spanish. You can even color this placemat with a dry erase marker for added fun. The Globe-Toddler Adventures of Mexico DVD is an interactive multiligual DVD with the multi-language narration options of English, Spanish, French or Chinese. It offers narration through puppets, children and animation while exploring all the wonderful sites, instruments, exotic animals and plants of Mexico through a background of music. I really love the After The Video Activities mentioned such as making guacamole, working with a butterfly kit and exploring geography on the Tot Talk’s Mexico map. The Adventures of Mexico CD is the soundtrack of the DVD and lyrics are included in both Spanish and English for the 14 tracks. Definitely check out the 3rd song called ‘El Chocolate’ which is Tot Talk’s unique version of this folklore song.
It has been a pleasure learning more about Mexico through the eyes of my young daughter as well as learning more about the passionate creator who develops her products from the heart. Like Sara states on her website, ‘It is never too early to learn something new and explore a new region of the world’! We hold similar philosophies on the importance of parent and children interactions to increase knowledge and bonding and Sara’s placemats, CDs and DVDs can create great talking points together. While you can purchase each item in this set separately you save 20% when you purchase them all together through this gift set. Highly recommended!
About Tot Talk, Inc and Creator Sara Danzelaud: Tot Talk, Inc is a San Mateo, California company started by mom, Sara Danzelaud. I am truly fascinated by her story! She grew up in a small town in eastern Oregon with a love of the outdoors and a penchant for math. She holds a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and a Master’s degree in Business at Harvard. She was working oversees in Europe when she met her French husband. Language and learning other cultures are very important in their family and their children are learning French and Spanish on top of their primary language of English. Tot Talk’s placemat series has expanded substantially and on top of multilingual opportunities, they also offer all kinds of educational placemats on subjects like money and keyboard letter placement. Check out Tot Talk’s Facebook page to keep posted on their new or upcoming educational products!
