Product Review: Facing the Day [Hardcover] (Ages 2+)
One of the Most Innovative and Cutting-Edge Publishers of Books for Children and Young Adults – Annick Press
Facing the Day is a favorite book in our house. The story follows a young active girl’s day from waking up and going to daycare to coming home and going to sleep with all the events, feelings and emotions that happen in between. There is fun and there is frustration in her day and the words pop on the page through rhymed, alliterative descriptions. An example of one of her frustrations is during her morning at daycare when a new boy does not pay attention to her. Her words and feelings come alive in this fragmented sentence of the book; ‘Angry face/Mean words/Furious!/Mad!/Crying face/Hurting/ Feeling very sad./Sorry face/Sagging/ Hanging down my head/Drooping face/ Down-hearted/I’m sorry what I said’. Have no fear, though, because soon she gets cheered up from her ‘slurpy, burpy’ lunch and is off to the next event of her day. This book is fun, realistic and silly with the rhyming scheme that makes it perfect for young children. Facing the Day is a wonderful, relatable book that both my husband and I enjoy reading out loud to our daughter. Thanks, Annick!

Click here to see a catalog of their children’s book from birth to age 7. I am also interested in checking out their book, I Did It Because …How a Poem Happens, which is a book on how to write poetry for ages 7+. Very cool idea. Check out Annick’s neat FREE book Podcasts where you can go behind the scenes to see the author’s inspiration for their Annick works.
About Author Laurel Dee Gugler: Laurel grew up on a farm in Kansas and thinks that her limited access to books as a child is one of the reasons she loves to read and write books for children. Laurel has a very rich history in early childhood education and has a background as an elementary teacher, education coordinator at a children’s museum, founder and coordinator of SHAIR International Resource Centre (a multi-cultural story-telling group) and has even taught English in India! If you want another great children’s book for the same age range by Laural, check out her book Muddle Cuddle.
