Magic in the Garden.  A Child’s Fairytale Garden to Grow and Explore!

Interested in getting your kid’s involved in organic gardening?  I would be almost willing to bet that your child would be more excited to plant Jack and the Beanstalk’s Magic Beans than your average run of the mill Blue Lake Pole Beans, right?  If you said yes, than Potting Shed’s line of fairytale garden kits may be right up your alley.  The idea of combining make-believe and gardening into these cool kits seemed like such an appeal for kids.  As a proud family of bean eaters, I chose to try Jack’s Magic Beans Fairytale Garden Planting Kit for my first review.

The idea behind Jack’s Magic Beans is to get kids excited to plant and imagine growing their very own bean stalk all the way to the sky!  This product is certified organic through the Idaho State Department of Agriculture and these recycled tin canisters include almost everything you need to create your own fairytale garden.  Jack’s Magic Beans canister includes a green stake, a small pencil for marking, growth chart for tracking, fun little activities like measuring and counting bean growth and drawing pictures of your beans, a recipe for Jack’s buttered beans, and (of course!) the certified organic seeds of Blue Lake Pole Beans.  What is not included is the recommended 6 foot high pole (we are currently using a tomato trellis as a temporary solution) you need for the pole beans to grow upwards.  There are also ways to grow pole beans in containers (definitely look up a reputable ‘How To’ on that) although more care is required and you would have to provide your own soil and pot.  Potting Shed also recommends using vegetable garden fertilizer in the growing season to fertilize.  However, this is a fun little starter kit for kids and will prove to your little ones that you do not need a fairy godmother to grant you a wish of a garden, you just need to do a little work and a lot of care to make your ‘magic’ beans grow.

About Blue Lake Pole Beans:  Coming from the Oregon Willamette Valley, Blue Lake Pole Beans can grow to 7 feet tall and are considered the perfect beans for canning.  The dark green pods have a straight smooth round shape and can grow up to 6 or 7 inches in length.  You can harvest the beans as soon as they are 5 inches in length when the beans inside are still small which can be considered a preference in taste.  Planting Tip!  Beans are sensitive to cold temperatures and frost and should be planted after any danger of frost is past.

Check out all the Potting Shed Kids Products!  The Potting Shed Kids Products Catalog has some really wonderful gardening kits to get children excited about growing gardens!  Other Fairytale gardening kits include Cinderella’s Magic Pumpkin and the Princess’ Pea.  I also found the Bird Habitat Scatter Garden to be a cute planting project for a family to create a bird paradise right in your own backyard.
