Product Review:  Dr. Seuss’ What’s in the Cat’s Hat? Game (Age 3+)

Games that encourage imagination, laughter, and active fun

The Dr Seuss What’s in the Cat’s Hat? game was a win-win for me because it is an early education game based on a beloved classic children’s book character as well as being in the same vein as the multisensory Montessori mystery bag lesson to help the child develop stereognostic sense.  The Cat in the Hat just celebrated his 55th birthday on March 12 and I would be hard-pressed to find any person in the United States who is not familiar with the tall, naughty cat with his red and white striped hat.  The Cat in the Hat was born out of a challenge presented to Theodor Geisel (writing as Dr Seuss) to make a children’s book that a 6 year old could not put down.  Dr. Seuss focus created a timeless relatable Beginner Books series and over half a century later there have been 11 million copies printed and translated in 12 languages and has become synonymous with the promotion of early literacy education.  To base a children’s game on the most recognized ensemble from this famous Cat and then incorporate muscular and language memory skill building seemed pure genius to me.

The Dr Seuss What’s in the Cat’s Hat? Game is a multi-sensory game that allows kids and adults to use all of their senses to figure out a mystery hidden object in the Cat’s Hat.  This is a deliciously simple yet wonderful game that includes one large Hat and 32 guessing cards that will help you collect clues to the mystery hidden object in the Hat.  The game stresses the importance of sensory exploration, deductive reasoning and creative thinking.  You get to supply the objects from around your house (it must be a familiar item!) to hide into the Cat’s Hat so the game never gets old.  The object hider (aka ‘Hat Master’) should take the hat into a separate room to find and place the mystery item into the hat so that the other players or ‘guessers’ do not see.  There are only four simple rules for the mystery object; it must fit in the hat, it must have a name everyone knows, it can’t be an object the guessers would not know and the object can’t be wet or messy!  The guessing cards are either a yellow question card or a blue action card.  These guessing cards have helpful hints like having the Hat Master divulge the room where the mystery object belongs or telling the beginning letter of the mystery object’s name.  There is even a special hole and peek through window hidden in the Cat’s Hat that you just may be able to use if you get the right card!  The guesser who correctly names the Mystery Object wins!  This is a fun and lively game simple enough for a preschooler and just as much fun for the kid in us adults.
