Product Review: Curious Kids Go on Vacation: Another Big Book of Words [Hardcover] (Geared towards ages 2-5, Reading Level Ages 4-8)
Another Big Book of Words
My first time on an airplane just happened to be my first international trip to England and Spain the summer of my 18th birthday. I saved my money from my minimum wage job as a deli worker (I made some pretty killer pizza rolls) at an I.G.A. grocery store that should have gone towards more savings for college books. My parents, who had never been on an airplane, were not enthused about my trip and I am sure they thought it was a waste of money. The trip overseas ended up being one of the best experiences I have ever had and one that I wish I could have done even earlier. Getting to see and experience another culture was incredibly eye-opening for someone who, until that summer, had only ventured a mere 518 miles (Myrtle Beach, SC) away from my home in my entire existence on earth. I don’t want my daughter to have such a limited scope in life and I can’t wait to start sharing my love of travel with her. I love finding great books on travel, especially international travel and I really was excited about Curious Kids Go on Vacation.
Another great read through Peachtree Publishers, Curious Kids Go on Vacation has been translated to English from its original language of French and comes from Big Book of Words series by Heloise Antoine. The Curious Kids are brother and sister twins who like to explore and find new objects. True to the series title, it is just a big book of words with a visual of the word above the name. The idea is to have your child have an adventure with this book by observing, recognizing and naming items they see throughout the book that helps facilitate learning. I could not find much on the author besides she lives in Brussels, but it really is Ingrid Godon’s illustrations that takes this book from good to great because her numerous sketches (more than 600!) fill the book and really emphasize the word ‘curious’ in the title. The book is broken down into ten different vacation activity sections which include things like ‘the airport’, ‘packing’ and ‘on the road’. Your child could probably spend most of the day trying to find, point out, read and name the numerous images related to travel. My daughter was super happy to see all the pictures of sunglasses (goggies as she calls them), hats, shoes, boots and pants. All the new vocabulary words like hot air balloon, sting ray, palm tree, etc, were fun to point out and name to Brooke who loves to try and repeat new words. I thought reading with curiosity was a fun way to spend time together with my daughter.
