Product Review:  Folding Cloths Activity (Toddler +)

A Resource for Preparing the Child’s Environment

With little fear of sounding like a broken record, I love Montessori practical skill activities for children.  I am always on the lookout for fun activities for Brooke to help her acquire skills that we adults take for granted.  Seemingly simple activities, like pouring water into a glass, are quite difficult when you are in the middle of developing fine motor skills.  I love to see the challenge through the eyes of my daughter and get great joy seeing her build her skills until she has mastered an activity.  I have lots of great resources I turn to for great (and inexpensive) Montessori products I have amassed which I am sharing with my wonderful blog readers.  I have yet to divulge one of my favorites and this special post will talk about Montessori Services and their very practical activity of folding cloths.

What can I really say about a folding cloths activity besides it is to –well- learn to fold?  None of us could fold until we learned the steps to do it and this is a great way to give your little one the visual steps on folding 101.  This activity shows a child four different ways to fold through contrasting color stitching (cloths available in either a red or blue color) in four separate crease-resistant 10 ¼” square cloths.  As with all things in life, practice makes perfect and as your child gains confidence they can apply these skills to other activities like folding towels and *gasp* the laundry.  Laundry folding could be incentive enough for this purchase, am I right?  Those with a sewing machine and skill could definitely make homemade versions of these folding cloths.  Those like me with no sewing machine or sewing capabilities will happily pay 12 dollars for the set.

About Montessori Services:  Montessori Services was founded in 1976 by PA Montessori teacher turned stay at home-mom, Jane Mills Campbell, with a focus on providing practical life skill activities.  Jane’s goal was to create cost-effective child-sized skill activities for families like mine.  Check out her wonderful story on the About Us page and find out how a new mom with no business plan created a successful business out of her passion from her Montessori classroom teaching experience.  For some really great early education practical life skills, try the pouring and transferring activities page.  I really love the Basic Pouring Water Activity and found it very useful for Brooke.

  1. Another great review that makes me want to buy the item! I don’t have a sewing machine, and of I did probably couldn’t use it to save my life. So yes, $12 is so totally affordable. Thanks for sharing!

    • Thanks so much for your reply, Whitney! Yes, I am not very crafty either! There are a lot of products I review that I think, ‘If only I could make….’….but then I get real! ha. However, I imagine there are lots of crafty readers out there who could easily make some of these products at home and kudos to them!
