I have a hearing problem. Not a hearing problem per se, more like a listening problem. A lot of my listening issues come from being hyperactive and I want and try to be a better listener. I have literally stopped myself mid-sentence when I notice I interrupt because it has become a really bad habit. I especially try to be a good listener to my daughter. I like to get down at her level and look her in the eye when she wants my attention. She has my hyper personality and I do not want her to have the same sort of listening issues I have. It is important to take the time to hear what someone is telling you, not only in that moment, but also in reflection. The Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen book is a cute child’s book on the topic of learning good listening skills from a very fidgety bunny.
The Howard B. Wigglebottom is a ten book series that was developed to help young children learn important life lessons like feeling good about themselves, listening, bullying and anger management. Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen is another great book in this series and talks about the easily distracted Howard who can’t seem to focus on listening. Howard’s diverted attention span brings much frustration to his teacher and friends and Howard realizes he needs to change his behavior. This crucial skill is taught through funny illustrations in a way that demonstrates the importance of listening and showing the respect of others through your entire body. The books also offers a recap of the listening lesson at the end of the book with some great listening discussion questions like, ‘Why is it important to be a better listener at home and at school?’. While I can’t promise it will make your little one not interrupt, it will at least get you to have a great discussion with your child about the importance of paying attention to others.
