From that day on, she brushed her hair every day!

Maggie McNair would keep those spiders away!

Struggling with brushing your child’s hair?  Have I got a book for you!  You won’t tell by looking at me that I have naturally curly hair, thanks to my ceramic straightener.  The fights with my curly hair and a brush started young and my heart dropped slightly when I saw my daughter’s curly tufts of hair poking out where her bald head once gleamed.  I love curly hair: on other people.  The daily struggles with my mom, a non curly, to tame my “rat’s nest” as a child are legendary in my household.  If a great detangling product existed, we certainly did not have it.  My hope is with all the great all natural detangler products in today’s market that my daughter will love and be able to manage her locks from the start.  If not, I have hopefully discovered a great reinforcement in Maggie McNair and her trouble with spider hair!

Maggie McNair doesn’t want her hair to be brushed and her mom is tired of fighting.  “Maggie McNair, it’s time to brush your hair.” Even her mom’s warning that spiders would set up camp in her head if she did not brush did not deter her defiance.  Maggie’s mom decided that the best lesson she could teach Maggie in personal hygiene would be to let her and her hair go rogue.  To my surprise, Maggie learns the hard way that the ‘myth’ of the spider hair was all too real.

The story is hilarious, the pictures adorable and I fell in love with the sweet yet hard headed Maggie.  The writing is so great in a rhythmic pattern and you feel like Maggie is a real child with a legitimate hair brushing issue.  I felt a little sigh of relief to know that in the end Maggie realized that keeping her hair nice and clean was more beneficial.  I have a feeling that after reading this book to your young one they will start looking forward to getting their hair brushed as a caution to not get spiders!

  1. I purchased both of the Maggie McNair books by Sheila Booth-Alberstadt for a friend of mine that is finishing up her degree in Elementary Education. I loved the the rhyme and flow of each book as well as the illustrations. My friend is looking forward to using them in her “Healthy Choices” unit when she gets a classroom of her own.

  2. Thanks so much for your comment. You are a fantastic friend, Jennifer! The Maggie McNair books would be perfect for your friend’s “Healthy Choices” unit. The latest Maggie McNair has Sugar Bugs in There would be another great addition for her to use. Keep me posted!
