Product Review: The Dot Girl First Period Kit (Girls, 8+)
The goal at Dot Girl Products is that every girl has a positive first period experience and an empowered first step to womanhood
Momma readers, if the Dot Girl Product goal I posted above made you roll your eyes and laugh because your first period experience was less than successful, I urge you to go to the Our Story page of Kathy and Terri’s website to read their hilarious and painful first time stories. These two sisters, who are also mothers and founders/partners in Dot Girl Products since 2006, have quite the passion for their period kits after their own admitted awkward introduction to womanhood.
It amazes me that women go through the labor and birth process and then find it awkward or difficult to discuss bodies and their development with our daughters when they are young. Young girls experience anxiety about starting their period if they do not have the proper information about what to expect or encouraging words to tell them this is something you can handle. I was one of the early developers and a kit like this would have been great to have had as early as 3rd or 4th grade so I would have been prepared. The booklet demystifies menstruation and gives practical, frank and encouraging information like how to track periods, when to know if something is wrong and who to talk to if you are not at home when it happens. The kit itself is cute yet small for discretion and can easily be restocked. I think that just feeling prepared with a kit of supplies will ease much of anxiety for girls during an already awkward time of developing bodies. I want to teach my daughter that growing up is nothing to be embarrassed about. The earlier I can realistically have conversations like this with her the more likely I will be the first person to tell her the facts instead of her hearing rumors from others. This kit will be a great help in the not-so-distant future to start our conversation together when she gets closer to that age.
Non-mom Caregivers don’t feel left out: Grandparents, dads and other primary non-mom caregivers can also use this product to help prepare and discuss these issues with their daughters! It is not which caregiver that delivers the message, it is how the message is delivered that matters. Let us do whatever we can to give our daughters a positive first period experience and an empowered first step to womanhood.
