I am a perfectly imperfect human being. If I had to guess, I figure I have roughly made around 176,100 self reported mistakes in my life if I take a very rough average of approximately 15 errors a day. It could be more or less depending on whom you ask and what defines a mistake. Most were done without thought or realization I was doing something wrong. Some blunders are simply because I tend to lack patience and was being careless. Some were because I simply did not have any direction, made a decision and later found out I made a faux pas. The mistakes I try to no longer make are repeat mistakes but even then I can have a lapse of judgment. I try to not dwell on the past, move into a positive direction and learn and appreciate each experience. I found in my ongoing children’s educational product research a lovely book by Barney Saltzberg that shows that he not only makes his Oops! fun, he also makes them beautiful.
Beautiful Oops! is an interactive and funny book that literally demonstrates mistakes made in the book that are then turned into beautiful art. The first page is torn – Oops! – but the next page the tear becomes the jagged edges of an alligators toothy grin. Brilliant! A hot cocoa stain becomes a silly frog. A bent page becomes the face of a penguin. If your child is like mine, they will love flipping and messing with each fold-out page and object. It takes an important message of learning from mistakes and not taking them too seriously in a way that kids can relate
When you think you have made a Mistake. Oops! Think of it as an Opportunity to make something BEAUTIFUL.
