Product Review: The Safe Side – Stranger Safety: Hot Tips To Keep Cool Kids Safe With People They Don’t Know And Kinda Know DVD (Age 4+)
We recently had news stories about child enticing close to the area that I live and it made me think about how I could be proactive in teaching my daughter to effectively deal with personal safety. I was looking for tools that would teach her about safety without making her paranoid. The Safe Side DVD, sponsored by John Walsh (America’s Most Wanted), caught my eye and I sought out a review opportunity.
The video is narrated by the Safe Side Superchick who reminds me of a goofy Saturday morning cartoon character with Pippi Longstocking hair. Superchick’s shirt changes from green to yellow to red throughout the video depending on the level of safety she encounters. She is extremely silly, sometimes overboard, but this is for younger kids and she does have great safety messages that comes through.
The video breaks down three types of people for kids; Safe Side Adults, Don’t Knows and Kinda Knows.
Safe Side Adult(s) – Your designated safety person who will keep you safe. Safe Side Adults can be a parent, immediate family or caregiver. Your Safe Side Adult should designate 3 more Safe Side Adults. Superchick makes a great point to kids that they are smart enough to know danger but are not strong enough to fight a grown person and that their Safe Side Adult will keep them safe.
Don’t Knows – People you do not know. Superchick says you can’t tell if people are going to be nice or not just by looking at them, just like a dog. They may look nice but you have to be careful. You would never go up and talk to an adult without asking your Safe Side Adult first.
Kinda Knows – People you kinda know, but are not your Safe Side Adult. These are people in your life like your doctor, dentist, babysitter, karate teacher or baseball coach. You kinda know the person but you would not want to go with them unless a Safe Side Adult knows first.
The DVD has several great features such as Spanish subtitles, green sticker safety badges and an insert with the Safe Side tips and for your Safe Side data, like 3 designated adults. My only suggestion for the video’s improvement is that the voice level could be louder. The background music can sometimes overpower Superchick’s narration.
