Product Review: Simon’s Hook; A Story About Teases and Put-downs [Hardcover] (Ages 6 and up)
A Tease is a Hook……Don’t Bite. Swim Free! In a world with bullies, the powerful message of the Simon’s Hook book is to keep a child’s focus on their ability to be in control of themselves. This book, written by an elementary school counselor, speaks volumes to me as an adult and I find this fantastic message to be a freeing concept that is so important to learn as a child.
Simon is having a bad hair day thanks to his sister who gave him a home haircut after a chewing gum incident. Simon is upset when he is teased at school and tries to find solace at his Grandma Rose’s house. Grandma Rose, one smart lady, gives Simon a lesson that a tease is like a hook. If you chase the hook and bite then you get caught. Grandma Rose offers Simon advice on how to deal with the teases and put-downs so that he can learn to be a ‘free fish’ and not chase hooks. As stated in the book’s Free Fish Poem, “When people tease you there’s much you can do. As Grandma Rose says, “It’s all up to you.”
The Grandma Rose website has a general store which offers purchase information about Simon’s Hook Bookmarks, Posters & Landyards that are great reminders of how to be a ‘Free Fish’ that is perfect for a classroom or bedroom. They offer a five step reminder to try to 1. Do Little 2. Agree 3. Distract 4. Laugh or make a Joke and/or 5. Walk Away when faced with a tease or put down. Let’s empower our kids to not take the teasing hook!
